Santanyí market: which days, opening hours, what's on sale and where to park
Santanyí market takes place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, from about 8:00 to 13:30, in the Plaça Major (next to the church of Sant Andreu) and the streets of the old town. It is one of the most charming markets in southern Mallorca, and one of the great privileges of living right in the center of Santanyí is walking down to it, no car, no hurry: from Santanyí Penthouse it is literally around the corner.
Which days and what time
- Wednesday: the big market, with more stalls and more buzz. It's the one people from the surrounding villages and visitors put in their diaries.
- Saturday: a little quieter and more about local shopping; perfect for doing the week's shop without the crowds.
- Hours: stalls set up from 8:00 and pack away around 13:30. In summer go before 11: it's cooler and the fresh produce is at its best.
- The market runs all year round, including winter (fewer clothing stalls, more produce).
What you'll find
The market spreads through the streets and squares of the old town, between the façades of golden marés stone so typical of Santanyí. There's everything: local fruit and vegetables, Mallorcan olives and cured meats (sobrassada, camaiot), cheeses, bread and ensaïmadas, flowers and plants, linen clothing and accessories, basketry, ceramics and local crafts. It's the perfect place to shop for fresh produce or take home an authentic souvenir. Bring cash: many stalls don't take cards.
Much more than shopping
The best thing about the market isn't just what you buy, but the atmosphere. The bar terraces on the square fill up, you hear Mallorcan being spoken and locals mix with visitors. It's the perfect moment to sit down for a coffee and an ensaïmada, watch the rhythm of the village and understand why Santanyí wins over everyone who visits. Many of the galleries and craft shops in the center open precisely during market hours.
Where to park
On market days the center is closed to traffic and the streets fill up. If you come by car, park in the streets around the edge of the old town: there is free parking less than five minutes' walk from the square. The earlier you arrive, the closer you park. If you're staying in the village, forget the car: you walk.
Tips
